Channel Relay September 2007

Dover Training Weekend (June 2007)

The English Channel is approximately 21 miles or 35 kilometres wide at its narrowest point (Shakespeare Beach, Dover to Cap Gris Nez, France). So for a 2 way swim we will be covering a minimum 42 miles between the 6 of us, but due to tides and the route we have to take this could be several miles further. We are hoping to achieve it in a time of around 24 hours which means each of us will be swimming for 4 hours in total an hour at time with a 5 hour gap in between each swim.

We did it! (Karen's report)

42mileswim Team successfully cross the English Channel!

2.30am on Wednesday 5th September. Looking out of the window I could see lights on in a neighbouring caravan where another team were preparing for their crossing. It was an exciting time for us all.

We were on our way to Folkestone Harbour by 3.30am. There we met our Channel Swimming Association official observer, Keith Jeffries.

We made it!

An outstanding effort by Nick Gabriel to land at Samphire Hoe in a time of 25:59. Now heading to Folkestone for a well deserved breakfast.

After struggling against a headwind for 4 hours Jamie Page put in another determined effort and now Nick Gabriel should reach Samphire Hoe in the next 30 minutes.

Final preparations at Dover

Final preparations at Dover

The whole team is now staying at Capel-le-Ferne near Dover and we have everything ready for the big day. We did a short swim at Shakespeare beach and finally got to see the pilot boat "Viking Princess" that will be escorting us. We will probably be swimming on Wednesday and the conditions look good.

Bondi Icebergs 50m pool

Bondi Icebergs 50m pool

When I arrived at Bondi the surf looked a bit big. So I chickened out and went to the Bondi Icebergs pool - "Home of Winter Swimming". It is a tidal pool and is actually colder than the ocean at 15 ÂșC. Further they occasionaly throw in some ice blocks to make it colder.
